Gordon Vernon is the Owner/Director of the interpreter Training and Learning Center (Interpreter TLC) providing interpreter training, diagnostics, mentoring, and interpreting services nationwide. Interpreting professionally since 1986, Gordon specializes in Conference, Medical, Emergency Medical, Scientific, Technical, Governmental, Business, Performing Arts and Video Remote Interpreting (VRI).
Prior to establishing Interpreter TLC, he was named as the nation-wide Manager of Continuing Education for the newly established Purple Communications, Inc. [2008-2009]. During his short tenure at Purple, he was instrumental in developing the rubric and screening materials for new interpreter hires and providing both internal and external professional development opportunities for interpreters in six different time zones.
As Director of Staff Development at Sign Language Associates (SLA), Inc. in Washington, D.C. [1995-2008] he managed SLA’s nationally renowned Mentorship Program, instituted the Peer Review and Observation Team to provide solicited feedback on interpreting skills, and managed the SLA Bridge Program to provide a road to certification for pre-certified interpreters.
He has served the interpreting profession on the local, state, regional, and national level. He served as a member of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Affiliate Chapter Relations Committee [2007-2009] and was President of the Potomac Chapter of RID (PCRID), serving the state of Maryland and Washington, District of Columbia, for two 2-year terms (2002-2005). He served on the PCRID Board of Directors in various positions a total of 9 years [1996-2005]. Before moving to D.C., he served as Vice President of Alabama RID (ALRID) [1993-1994]. He served as the interpreter coordinator for the 2002 World Association of Sign Language Interpreters Conference (WASLI) in Washington, DC and Conference Chair of the 2004 RID - Region II Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Currently, he is serving as Assistant Treasurer and Webmaster on the Board of Directors of the Registro de Intérpretes para Sordos de Puerto Rico (RISPRI).
After living and working in Washington, D.C. for 15 years, Gordon returned to his roots in 2009 to Citronelle, AL. He enjoyed restoring his family home (an historic 1882 Victorian and the first private home in Citronelle to receive the Historic Shield and Banner from the Mobile Historic Development Commission.), gardening, and serving a one year term as the President of the Citronelle Historical Preservation Society.
In 2015, Gordon relocated San Juan, Puerto Rico. Y'all come on down and sit a spell! He is living by the beach, learning Spanish (a poco a poco), specializes in Video Remote Interpreting (VRI), and does consulting work. As a life time member of the Citronelle Historical Preservation Society he still serves as the Director of Online Outreach for the Society.
